Here’s the actual “news” part of the story: Apple CEO Tim Cook was seen at Valve’s head offices in Bellevue, Washington today. Here’s the part where the useless and over-excited speculation begins: Could this mean Apple and Valve are getting together to discuss a closer collaboration that might result in more and better games for OS X, iOS or both?
You may not know Valve, but a lot of people do: They have given the world many of the best video games ever to hit a display screen (Half Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, Team Fortress 2) and also run Steam, which is one of the most successful and popular game selling/matching/community hubs. They did a 180 on their Apple dealings in 2010 when they dropped Steam on the Mac for the first time and a number of their games along with it (they even gave Portal away for free), and have promised to keep their Mac support evergreen.
(Though we’ve heard that one before)
iOS has certainly come to the fore as a (if not “the”) major gaming device of this generation, and Mac OS X has seen a sharp rise in adoption with the increase of Mac sales in the last few years. Could Valve and Apple be working on something awesome together which would result in hella cool gaming action disseminating to your iPhone or iPad?
Remember, kids… no hard facts here. Cook might have just dropped by to collect $10 Gabe Newell owes him for losing a bet or something.
